Carnival Ice Cream Parlour

Carnival Ice Cream isn’t just a place to get dessert; it is an absolute cultural institution in Colombo. If you ask any local adult about their childhood weekends, they will vividly remember begging their parents for a sundae at Carnival.

The parlor is massive, deeply colorful, and has a charmingly retro feel that hasn’t changed much since the 1980s. When you walk in, you are greeted by long glass display cases filled with dozens of bright, locally-made ice cream flavors, from classic vanilla and chocolate to exotic local fruits like mango, passionfruit, and woodapple.

What Kids Love Most

  • The Sundaes: The menu features towering sundaes with sparklers, excessive amounts of brightly colored syrup, nuts, and wafers. It is every dentist’s nightmare and every child’s dream.
  • The Vibe: The place is always buzzing with birthday parties, large extended families laughing, and teenagers hanging out. It is loud and happy.

Parent Tips

Do not come here expecting artisanal Italian gelato. The charm of Carnival is the sugary, colorful, slightly artificial joy of childhood ice cream. Try to visit in the late afternoon rather than right after dinner to avoid the massive queues, and immediately hunt for a table upstairs where it tends to be slightly quieter.

👍 What We Loved

  • An overwhelming array of colorful flavors and sundaes
  • Incredibly family-friendly, bustling atmosphere
  • Extremely affordable prices compared to boutique gelaterias

👎 Could Be Better

  • Parking on Galle Road can be a nightmare on weekends
  • Very noisy and chaotic during peak evening hours
