- The Checkerboard: The terrace features a massive black-and-white tiled checkerboard floor right on the edge of the ocean. It’s a fantastic, safe space for kids to stretch their legs while parents sip tea.
- The High Tea Towers: The three-tiered stands of finger sandwiches, scones, massive chocolate cakes, and colorful sweets are a universal hit with children.
- The Bagpiper: This is the main event. Every single evening just before sunset (around 5:50 PM), a resident bagpiper in full Scottish regalia marches across the checkerboard. He plays stirring music while ceremoniously lowering the Sri Lankan flag. Kids are absolutely captivated by the noise and the pageantry.
Parent Tips
Book a table on the edge of the Checkerboard (closest to the ocean) well in advance, as the sunset views are spectacular and the tables fill up fast. Have your kids dress nicely for photos, and arrive around 4:30 PM so you have plenty of time to eat before the piper arrives!
