KIKU Colombo — Japanese-Inspired Brunch Café

Our Visit to KIKU Colombo

KIKU is one of those rare Colombo cafés that feels like stepping into a completely different world. Tucked above Shirohana Flowers on Layards Road, this Japanese-inspired gem combines stunning minimalist design with a genuinely family-friendly atmosphere.

From the moment you walk in, the attention to detail hits you — clean lines, natural wood, ceramic tableware, and a sense of calm that’s rare in Colombo’s café scene. It’s the kind of place where you immediately want to take a photo, then forget your phone because the food arrives and it’s beautiful.

What Makes It Special for Families

The Food Kids Love

KIKU’s menu is Japanese-fusion done right, and crucially, it’s full of things kids will happily devour:

  • Chicken Katsu Sando — crispy, golden, and perfectly portioned. Our kids demolished these.
  • Chicken Gyoza — juicy dumplings that are always a crowd-pleaser with little ones.
  • Bagel sandwiches — the Tamago bagel (with Japanese-style omelette) is a winner.
  • French Toast — their take is light, fluffy, and sweet enough for kids without being overwhelming.
  • Teriyaki Chicken Donburi — a safe bet for older kids who enjoy rice bowls.

Drinks Worth Trying

The Matcha Latte is genuinely one of the best in Colombo — creamy, well-balanced, and beautifully presented. The Hojicha Latte is a lovely alternative. For kids, the fresh juices and garden sodas (Elderflower & Rosemary) are excellent.

The Toddler Corner

KIKU has a small but thoughtful play area with toys and books for younger kids. It’s not a full-blown play zone, but it’s enough to keep a toddler happily occupied while you finish your matcha. This makes it far more manageable than many of Colombo’s more “instagram-worthy” cafes that have zero concessions for families.

The Vibe

KIKU leans towards tranquil and serene. The music is soft, the lighting is warm, and the atmosphere is closer to a Japanese tea house than a noisy brunch spot. This is a positive if your kids are reasonably settled diners, but if you’re navigating a full-blown toddler meltdown, you might feel a bit conspicuous.

That said, the staff are genuinely lovely about it — no judgmental stares here. They’ve happily accommodated our occasional chaos with warm smiles and quick drink refills.

Practical Information

  • Best time to visit: Weekday mornings for the calmest experience
  • Seating: Indoor only — tables and counter seating
  • Parking: Street parking on Layards Road (can be tricky)
  • Reservations: Walk-in usually fine on weekdays; weekends can get busy
  • Vegetarian/Vegan: Options available on the menu

Our Verdict

4.5 out of 5 — KIKU is a genuinely special café that manages to be both aesthetically stunning and welcoming to families. The Japanese-fusion menu is executed beautifully, the toddler play area shows they’ve thought about parents, and the atmosphere is a refreshing antidote to Colombo’s noisy, over-stimulating dining options. It’s become one of our regular spots.

Best for: A calm, elevated brunch with kids who enjoy trying new flavours. Perfect for a post-park pit stop or a Saturday morning treat.
