Our Visit to Kiri Kōpi

If you’ve ever driven through the misty hills to Ella, chances are you’ve heard of Kiri Kōpi — the beloved coffee spot that became a cult favourite among travellers and locals alike. The great news for Colombo parents? They’ve opened a branch right on Flower Road in Colombo 7, and it is everything you’d hope for.

Walking into Kiri Kōpi feels like a warm hug. The space is rustic-modern — think exposed brick, natural wood, hanging plants, and that unmistakable aroma of freshly pulled espresso. But what makes it truly special for families is that they’ve designed the space with kids in mind, without turning it into a children’s restaurant.

What Kids Love

The Play Area

This is the real gem for parents. Kiri Kōpi has a dedicated children’s play area right inside the café. It’s not enormous, but it’s well-thought-out with books, toys, and enough space for toddlers to potter about while you actually manage to drink a hot coffee. For a café of this calibre, having any play space at all is exceptional.

The Gelato

Let’s be honest — the gelato counter is the main event for most kids. It’s house-made, comes in rotating flavours, and is the perfect bribe for “just 10 more minutes, please” when you’re not quite ready to leave.

The Food They’ll Eat

The menu leans into Sri Lankan fusion with international flair, and there’s plenty that kids enjoy:

  • Pol Roti Quesadillas — a genius mashup of coconut roti and quesadilla that kids devour
  • French Toast — classic and beautifully done
  • Jackfruit Wraps — surprisingly kid-friendly and delicious
  • Pastries and baked goods — the display counter alone will have your kids pressing their noses against the glass

What Parents Love

The Coffee

The coffee here is genuinely excellent. Whether you’re a flat white loyalist or want to branch into a Maple Sea Salt Matcha Latte or a Hojicha creation, the baristas know what they’re doing. The house-made mocktails and garden sodas are also outstanding — perfect for the non-coffee drinkers in your group.

The Atmosphere

Kiri Kōpi nails the balance between “cool café” and “family-friendly.” It feels curated and intentional without being stuffily exclusive. You won’t feel judged for having a toddler with crumbs everywhere — but you will feel like you’re somewhere genuinely nice.

Work-Friendly

The WiFi is reliable, the seating is comfortable, and the coffee keeps flowing. If you need to answer emails while the kids play, this is one of the best setups in Colombo.

Our Verdict

4.6 out of 5 — Kiri Kōpi brings everything that made the Ella original special to Colombo, and adds a family-friendly dimension that makes it an absolute standout. The combination of excellent coffee, creative food, a kids’ play area, and a beautiful space is nearly unbeatable. It’s quickly become one of our most-visited cafés.
