The Gallery Café — Art Meets Coffee in Colombo 7

Set in the former studio of legendary Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, The Gallery Café is one of Colombo’s most architecturally stunning dining spaces. It’s primarily an adult café, but it absolutely works for well-managed family visits.

The Space

The café occupies a beautifully restored courtyard space with:

  • High ceilings and tropical plants
  • Contemporary art hung on every wall
  • A courtyard with natural light and a reflecting pool
  • Intimate indoor and outdoor seating

For parents who appreciate design and architecture, this is a treat. Kids absorb the artistic atmosphere too — our children have asked interesting questions about the art on the walls.

The Food

  • Pasta and risotto — reliable kid options
  • Sandwiches and wraps — simple and good
  • Excellent coffee — proper espresso drinks
  • Cake selection — always has child-friendly options

Family Tips

  • Visit during weekday mornings/afternoons — it’s quieter and more spacious
  • The courtyard is the best spot for families — more room and less noise concern
  • This isn’t a “let kids run free” space — it works best with children who can sit through a meal

Our Verdict

The Gallery Café scores 4.2 out of 5 — a beautiful space with good food that works for families who appreciate a calmer dining experience. Best with kids aged 4+.
