For parents who want their child to receive formal, structured music education with a pathway to international graded exams, the Colombo School of Music is the gold standard in the city.
Class Details
- Ages: 5+ (recommended to start piano at 5-6 for hand coordination)
- Instruments: Piano, keyboard, and music theory
- Exam boards: Trinity College London and ABRSM
- Class type: Individual lessons (30 or 45 minutes)
- Schedule: Weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings
- Cost: LKR 3,000-5,000 per session (varies by level and duration)
What to Expect
The curriculum follows international graded exam syllabi, meaning your child progresses through structured levels with clear benchmarks. This includes:
- Practical skills: Scales, pieces, sight-reading
- Music theory: Written theory exams alongside practical
- Performance: Annual recitals and exam preparation concerts
- Ear training: Aural tests as part of exam preparation
Our Experience
Our 8-year-old studied piano here for two years. The teaching quality was excellent — structured, patient, and progress-oriented. She passed her Grade 2 Trinity exam with distinction, which was a proud moment.
The downside is the commitment required. This isn’t “try music for fun” — it requires daily home practice (minimum 20-30 minutes) and consistent lesson attendance. For families ready for that commitment, the results are remarkable.
Tips
- Start at 5-6 for piano — earlier is too young for formal training
- Rent a keyboard first before investing in a piano
- Be honest about the practice commitment with your child
- The annual recital is a wonderful milestone — encourage your child to participate
Our Verdict
4.3 out of 5 — the best option for serious music education in Colombo. Not for casual exploration (try group music classes for that), but for dedicated young musicians, it’s unmatched.
