Sri Lanka Air Force Museum

Situated on the edge of the historic Ratmalana airport base, just a hop over the southern border of Colombo city limits, the Sri Lanka Air Force Museum is effectively a massive junkyard-turned-shrine of aviation history.

This is a phenomenal half-day trip for boys and girls fascinated by mechanical engineering or simply obsessed with large, loud things that fly.

What Kids Love Most

  • The Sheer Scale: There are over 60 aircraft displayed here. Many massive bombers, cargo planes, and sleek fighter jets sit right out on the grass for children to walk under and touch.
  • Flight Simulator: For older children, the museum occasionally operates a digital flight simulator, letting them experience the basic controls of a heavy aircraft.
  • Classic Cars & Armored Vehicles: Aside from airplanes, several historical ground vehicles are beautifully preserved in the main hangars.

Parent Tips

This museum occupies a massive physical footprint. While the main hangars are covered, large exhibits require walking across sun-baked tarmac and lawns. Arrive by 9:00 AM. Bring sun hats, ample water, and sunscreen.

Since food options at the museum are basic, a popular family plan is to finish exploring the planes around 12:30 PM, then head over to Mount Lavinia Beach for a relaxing seafood lunch listening to the waves.

👍 What We Loved

  • Massive exhibits that kids get incredibly close to
  • The flight simulator offers a thrilling, interactive element
  • Lots of wide-open outdoor spaces safely enclosed inside the base

👎 Could Be Better

  • The site is very large, and walking between hangars can be extremely hot
  • Cafeteria options on-site are minimal
