Beira Lake Pedal Boats

The Beira Lake, right in the heart of Colombo 02, is more than just a body of water; it’s a serene escape from the relentless city traffic. Renting a swan-shaped or conventional pedal boat is a rite of passage for many Colombo families, providing a unique vantage point of the city’s rapidly changing skyline.

It’s an active way to spend 30-45 minutes, especially in the late afternoon when the heat has subsided and the city lights begin to twinkle on the water.

What Kids Love Most

  • The Swan Boats: Most of the pedal boats are shaped like giant white swans, which is a big hit with younger children.
  • The Pelicans: The lake is a haven for large spot-billed pelicans. Kids can often pedal surprisingly close to these enormous birds as they float on the water.
  • The Skyline: Looking up at the Lotus Tower from the middle of the lake is a far more impressive sight than from the street!

Parent Tips

Safety first: basic life jackets are provided and should be worn by everyone on the boat. Aim for a visit around 5:15 PM so you can enjoy the sunset from the water. Since there are several entry points to the lake, the most common boat rental spot is near the Seema Malaka Temple, allowing you to combine a spiritual visit with a fun boat ride in one evening.

πŸ‘ What We Loved

  • One of the most relaxed and unhurried experiences in the city
  • Stunning views of the Colombo Lotus Tower and surrounding skyscrapers
  • Affordable and centrally located

πŸ‘Ž Could Be Better

  • Pedaling can be tiring for small children
  • The lake water can occasionally have a strong smell (especially after rain)
