Dehiwala Zoo — A Full Day of Animal Adventures

The National Zoological Gardens at Dehiwala is one of the oldest and most visited zoos in Asia, and it remains the ultimate family day trip for Colombo parents. With hundreds of animal species, an aquarium, butterfly garden, and spacious grounds, it easily fills an entire day.

Big Animals

  • Elephants: The star attraction — kids can watch daily feedings and sometimes bathing
  • Lions and tigers: Always a hit — the big cats fascinate children

Getting There

Dehiwala Zoo is approximately 30 minutes from central Colombo by car. Alternatively, take the train to Dehiwala station — the zoo is a 5-minute walk from there.
