Diyatha Uyana is Colombo’s best-kept family secret. Located along the Diyawanna Oya lake in Battaramulla (near Parliament), this beautifully maintained park and market area is where Colombo families spend their weekends — and for good reason.
What Makes It Special
The Lakeside Path
A well-paved 2km walking/cycling path runs alongside the lake, with benches, lamp posts, and landscaped gardens. It’s perfect for:
- Morning walks with babies in strollers
- Teaching kids to cycle (flat, traffic-free)
- Evening jogs while kids ride scooters
- Simply sitting by the lake watching the birds
Paddle Boats
Paddle boats are available for hire on the lake — a guaranteed hit with kids of all ages. LKR 500-800 per 30 minutes for a pedal boat that seats 4. The lake is calm and shallow, so it’s perfectly safe.
Weekend Market
Every Friday-Sunday, Diyatha Uyana hosts a vibrant market with:
- Food stalls: Sri Lankan street food, BBQ, juices, ice cream
- Plant nursery: Tropical plants and flowers
- Craft stalls: Local crafts and handmade items
- Kids’ items: Toys, books, and clothing at bargain prices
The market is the main draw for many families, and it’s a wonderful sensory experience for children.
Fish and Turtles
The lake is home to various fish and turtles that can be seen from the bank. Many families bring bread to feed the fish (though this isn’t officially encouraged for ecological reasons).
