Dalawella Beach (Wijaya Beach)

Dalawella Beach (often referred to locally as Wijaya Beach, after the famous restaurant located there) is widely considered the ultimate family beach in Southern Sri Lanka.

Unlike many other beaches along the southern coast that feature strong currents and massive crashing waves, Dalawella is protected by a large natural coral reef just offshore. This reef acts as a phenomenal breakwater, creating a massive, calm, and shallow β€œlagoon” right on the beach. It is basically the perfect natural swimming pool for toddlers and children learning to swim!

What Kids Love Most

  • The Sea Turtles: This beach is world-famous for its resident sea turtles. If you wade into the water (especially around mid-morning to early afternoon), you are almost guaranteed to see giant sea turtles swimming gracefully around your legs. Kids absolutely lose their minds at this magical wildlife encounter!
  • The Famous Rope Swing: Originally a local secret, the massive palm-tree rope swing here is a hit with older kids (and parents!) who want to swing out over the Indian Ocean.
  • Wijaya Beach Restaurant: You don’t have to go far when the kids get hungry. The wood-fired pizzas here are legendary and a massive crowd-pleaser for picky eaters.

Parent Tips

Come early in the morning to grab a good spot on the sand, as the beach area is relatively narrow and gets crowded by late morning during the season. Bring your own snorkeling gear for the kids so they can watch the tropical fish and turtles clearly!
