Hiriketiya Beach (Hiri)

A horseshoe-shaped hidden pearl down the southern coast. Calm, shallow waters for toddlers, beginner surf lessons for older kids, and brilliant beach cafes.

Hiriketiya Beach (Hiri)

Affectionately known as β€œHiri” to the locals and expats, Hiriketiya Beach is often described in family travel blogs as the absolute best beach for kids in Sri Lanka. It’s easy to see why.

Tucked away near Dikwella, this is a completely enclosed, horseshoe-shaped bay fringed by leaning palm trees. Because of its shape, the bay is physically protected from the strong, crashing waves that dominate the rest of the southern coast. The left side of the beach has a gentle, rolling break that is perfect for boogie boarding and beginner surf lessons, while the right side is flat, shallow, and mostly wave-freeβ€”essentially a giant, sandy kiddie pool!

What Kids Love Most

  • Surf Lessons: If your kids (ages 6+) have ever wanted to try surfing, this is the place. The local instructors are fantastic with children, and the foam boards and gentle white-water waves make standing up almost guaranteed.
  • Jungle Vibe: Peacocks roam the paths behind the beach, and you can regularly spot monkeys swinging through the canopy above you while you lay on the sand.
  • Kid-Friendly Food: The beach shacks here cater heavily to Western palates alongside local food. Expect incredible smoothie bowls (which kids view as ice cream) and excellent wood-fired pizzas right on the beach.

Parent Tips

Because Hiri is small and has exploded in popularity, it’s best to arrive around 8:00 AM to secure a good spot in the shade. The waves are also calmest in the morning. If the beach gets too crowded by midday, simply retreat to one of the shaded cafes like Dots Bay House for a long, lazy lunch while the kids play board games.

πŸ‘ What We Loved

  • Protected horseshoe bay means the water is incredibly calm on one side
  • Great spot for kids to take their first surf lesson
  • Tons of shade from overhanging palm trees
  • Excellent wood-fired pizza and smoothie bowls right on the sand

πŸ‘Ž Could Be Better

  • Can feel a bit crowded during peak season (Jan-March) because the bay is small
  • Accommodation nearby is getting pricier
