Mount Lavinia Beach is the closest proper beach to Colombo and remains the go-to beach destination for Colombo families. Located about 20 minutes south of the city, it offers golden sand, warm waters, and a relaxed atmosphere that’s perfect for a family beach day.

The Beach Experience

The beach stretches for several kilometres with a mix of quiet spots and busier areas near the Mount Lavinia Hotel. For families, the area near the hotel is best — it’s cleaner, has lifeguard presence during peak times, and is close to restaurants and facilities.

What Kids Love

  • Building sandcastles: The sand is good quality for construction
  • Paddling in the shallows: The wave action varies, but there are calmer spots for young children
