Located just a short drive outside the city center, Water World Kelaniya is Sri Lanka’s premier (and only major) aquatic park. If your little ones are obsessed with sharks, finding Nemo, or anything ocean-related, this is a fantastic morning outing.
The complex is actually two parks in one: the main aquarium and an adjacent bird park, making it excellent value for money and easily filling a 2 to 3-hour window.
What Kids Love Most
- The Underwater Tunnel: Walk right through the center of a massive tank while sharks, massive groupers, and rays swim directly over your head.
- Touch Pools: There are designated, supervised areas where kids can gently interact with starfish and safer marine life.
- The Bird Park: After looking at fish, kids can wander through the aviary which features brightly colored macaws, cockatoos, and even ostriches.
Parent Tips
Manage your expectations—this is not SeaWorld, but rather a charming, localized attraction. It’s best to visit early on a weekday morning to beat both the heat and the loud crowds of local school field trips!
