Weras Ganga Park

Weras Ganga Park in Bellanwila/Boralesgamuwa is part of the larger wetland park project revitalizing Colombo’s outskirts. It perfectly balances nature, leisure, and family activities, lying almost adjacent to the culturally significant Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya temple.

This park is a fantastic destination for an early morning bike ride or a late afternoon stroll with the kids, wrapping up with some fantastic local snacks from the on-site food stalls.

What Kids Love Most

  • Swan Boat Rides: You can rent out a large fiberglass swan boat and pedal around the calm waters of the lake. It’s an interactive, tiring, and wildly fun 30 minutes for young children!
  • Wildlife Spotting: The walkways cross over the water in several sections, giving children a bird’s-eye view of large fish, turtles, and aquatic birds like pelicans.
  • The Food Court: Kids rarely turn down a trip to an open-air food stall. You can easily pick up sweet treats and fresh fruit juices.

Parent Tips

Like the much larger Attidiya Bird Sanctuary further down the road, Weras Ganga represents the best of Colombo’s wetland ecology. Due to the high water coverage, make sure your children don’t lean too close to the edges of the un-fenced boardwalks. On weekends, combined with the temple traffic, the parking lot becomes full incredibly fastβ€”arrive before 4:00 PM if you want to snag a spot easily!

πŸ‘ What We Loved

  • Clean and safe walking paths stretching across the lake
  • Swan boat rides are a big hit with all kids
  • A very relaxed and unhurried local atmosphere

πŸ‘Ž Could Be Better

  • Limited parking on weekends
  • Boat rides have a fee and sometimes a waiting line
