Dutch Hospital Play Area β€” Family Evening Spot in Fort

The Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct in Colombo Fort is one of the city’s most atmospheric dining and shopping destinations, and it also happens to have a lovely outdoor play area that makes it a fantastic family evening spot.

The Setting

The Dutch Hospital is a beautifully restored 17th-century colonial building that now houses upscale restaurants, boutiques, and cafΓ©s. The central courtyard has a large open area where kids can run, play, and enjoy the evening breeze off the harbour.

The play area itself is simple β€” there are a few climbing structures and interactive play panels designed for younger children. But the real appeal is the open space. In a city where kids are often cooped up indoors, having a safe, car-free area to run around is genuinely valuable.

Why We Love It

What makes Dutch Hospital special for families is the combination of great dining and play space. Here’s our typical family evening routine:

  1. Arrive around 5pm when the heat starts dying down
  2. Let the kids play in the courtyard while we grab a drink at one of the outdoor cafΓ©s
  3. Move to dinner at one of the excellent restaurants (Ministry of Crab, The Brewery, etc.)
  4. After-dinner play β€” the courtyard is beautifully lit in the evening and kids love running around

It’s one of the few places in Colombo where adults get a quality dining experience while kids have space to be kids.

Restaurants for Families

The Dutch Hospital has several restaurants, and most are surprisingly kid-friendly:

  • The Brewery: Casual atmosphere, burgers and pizzas that kids love, outdoor seating
  • Isto: Portuguese-inspired cuisine with kid-friendly pasta options
  • The Grand Buffet: if your kids are adventurous eaters

Practical Details

  • Cost: Free to enter and play
  • Best time: Late afternoon/evening (4pm-8pm) β€” avoid midday heat
  • Parking: Limited street parking in Fort area β€” take a tuk-tuk or taxi
  • Toilets: Available inside restaurants
  • Safety: The courtyard is car-free, but it’s not enclosed β€” keep an eye on wanderers

Our Verdict

The Dutch Hospital isn’t a play centre β€” it’s a family-friendly dining destination that happens to have space for kids to play. We think it’s one of the best spots in Colombo for a relaxed family evening out. The colonial architecture, the breeze, the restaurants, and the freedom for kids to run around make it a winner. Just avoid the midday sun.
