Diyatha Station Train Restaurant

If you have a child who is currently going through a β€œThomas the Tank Engine” or general locomotive phase, Diyatha Station is an absolute goldmine.

Located right along the banks of the massive man-made lake at Diyatha Uyana, this restaurant is constructed entirely out of authentic, decommissioned Sri Lankan train carriages. They have been beautifully restored, repainted in vibrant colors, and converted into dining cabins.

What Kids Love Most

  • The Novelty: Actually sitting inside a real train carriage, complete with the vintage windows and narrow aisles, but eating a plate of fries and a milkshake!
  • The Surroundings: The carriages are parked right next to the water. Kids can look out the window and watch ducks, swans, and boats floating by while they eat.
  • The Lights: At night, the entire train and the surrounding park are lit up with fairy lights.

Parent Tips

Don’t come to Diyatha Station expecting a five-star culinary experience; the food is very standard local fare, sandwiches, and fast food. You are paying purely for the novelty and the atmosphere! Pair this dinner with a late-afternoon walk around the Diyatha Uyana loop so the kids can see the massive outdoor aquarium tanks first.

πŸ‘ What We Loved

  • The absolute ultimate dining novelty for train-obsessed kids
  • Set exactly next to the beautiful walking paths of Diyatha Uyana
  • Great spot to watch ducks and swans on the lake while waiting for food

πŸ‘Ž Could Be Better

  • The menu is somewhat basic (mostly local rice/noodles and fast food)
  • Carriages can feel a bit cramped
