Ministry of Crab — Can You Bring Kids?

Ministry of Crab is on every Colombo food list, and for good reason — the crab here is extraordinary. But as parents, the question is: should you bring your kids?

The short answer: yes, but with caveats.

The Experience

Ministry of Crab operates on a no-reservation, walk-in only policy (as of our last visit). You queue up — usually 20-45 minutes during peak times — and are seated when a table opens. This is the biggest challenge with kids: managing the wait.

Tips for the wait:

  • Arrive right at opening (ideally 12pm for lunch or 7pm for dinner) to minimise wait time
  • Let kids explore the Dutch Hospital courtyard while waiting
  • Keep snacks handy — hungry kids + long waits = meltdowns

The Food

The menu is simple and focused:

  • Crab in various preparations: chilli crab, pepper crab, garlic crab, butter crab
  • Prawns — smaller portions, less mess, good for sharing
  • Rice and accompaniments
  • A few non-crab options (fish, chicken)

For kids, the butter crab or garlic crab are the mildest options. Be prepared for messy eating — crab is hands-on, shells-cracking cuisine. This is actually part of the fun for older kids, but possibly stressful with a restless toddler.

Family Verdict

Ministry of Crab works best for families with children aged 6+ who enjoy seafood and don’t mind getting messy. For a special family experience, it’s unforgettable — just manage expectations about the wait and the mess. 4.0 out of 5 for families.
