Planning a weekend around kids is an art form. Too many activities and everyone melts down. Too few and boredom strikes. Our 2025 battle-tested weekend itinerary balances fun, food, rest, and genuine family enjoyment across the best new and classic spots.
Saturday: Coastal & Park Adventures
8:00am — Brunch at Barefoot Cafe
Start the weekend right at the iconic Barefoot Cafe. It’s quiet in the morning, and the art-filled garden is a calming space for kids. Grab some hoppers or pancakes and soak in the atmosphere.
10:00am — Port City Colombo Beach
Head to the newly opened Port City Beach. It’s the best paved walkway in the city for strollers, and the wide-open views are perfect for morning photos. Let the kids run free in the sand and enjoy the fresh sea air.
12:30pm — Lunch at DIYATHA Station
For a unique lunch experience, head to Diyatha Station. Kids love the railway-themed dining, and it’s located right next to the water.
2:00pm — Rest / Nap Time
Back home for lunch and naps. Do not skip this step. A family weekend is a marathon, not a sprint.
4:30pm — Adventure Zone (OGF)
After rest, head to the Adventure Zone at One Galle Face for 2 hours of premium indoor play. It’s the best way to burn energy before the evening sets in.
6:30pm — Galle Face Green Sunset
End the day at Galle Face Green. Buy kites, watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean, and enjoy the street food buzz.
Sunday: Culture & Nature
9:00am — Independence Square Stroller Walk
A gentle start to Sunday. Park at Independence Square and enjoy the 2km paved loop. It’s one of the few places in Colombo where you can truly walk with a stroller without stress.
11:00am — National History Museum
Just a short hop away is the Natural History Museum. It’s fascinating for kids and provides a quiet, educational escape from the mid-day heat.
1:00pm — Family Lunch at Upali’s
Enjoy a proper Sri Lankan lunch at Upali’s. It’s high-quality, very family-friendly, and located right next to the park.
3:30pm — Beira Lake Pedal Boats
For a late-afternoon adventure, try the Beira Lake Pedal Boats. It’s a fun, quirky way to see the city from a different angle and kids love “driving” the swan boats.
5:30pm — Relaxed Evening
Head home for an early bedtime, ready for the week ahead!
